Un descanso poderoso is a powerful mix of percussive tropical pop and electronic sounds, folk resistance and twisted traditional tunes from Latin America and the diaspora, aimed at gifting you a slice of inspiration in isolation. There’s a diverse mix of musicians included. Just in the first few tracks we have an Indian choral ensemble performing a classic bolero, a paisa rapper and producer playing around with with classic hip hop production, a tropical electronic duo from Bogotá collaborating with indie merengue singers Mula, and an Afro-Chicano two-piece starting a Queer Love Revolution.
The second track ‘Novena’ comes from Crudo Means Raw’s 2020 album ‘Esmeraldas’, which was released at the end of march. The infectious, alternative disc collects a whole range of tracks and collaborations from his repertoire since 2017, and mixes them smoothly into sections – “colours” – which flow and morph from one to the next. Lido Pimienta, who sings the powerful ‘Eso Que Tú Haces,’ will release much-awaited album ‘Miss Colombia’ today, Friday April 17th. It’s an emotional, colourful exploration of her Colmbian-ness and the complicated relationship she has with her heritage. Listening to the album, you’ll be transported to San Basilio de Palenque, the first free town in the Americas, where the album was partly recorded.
Pascuala Ilabaca wrote the track ‘Compañeras al compás’ when she arrived home after protesting the recent social crisis on the streets of Valparaíso and witnessing the brutal assault of ex-Presidential spokeswoman, Pamela Contreras. She uploaded herself singing the song, just with a guitar, onto IGTV that night. She has since released a video of her performing the song with a full female strings arrangement (as you hear on the mix).
